She has travelled to galleries in Paris and Milan and also in London. Gunjan is a Masters graduate in furniture design from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London. Gunjan Gupta practiced in interior design till eight years, before she decided to wrap up her corporate career to unwrap her entrepreneurial dream.
Based out of New Delhi, she founded Wrap Art & Design in 2006, to showcase India's traditional designs but at premium prices. It is a contemporary luxury and lifestyle brand specialising in furniture product and art installations. Wrap invites Indian artisans mostly from Rajasthan and works closely with them marrying Gunjan's vision with their craft.
Gunjan was very interested in princely and quarterly craft that India had sustained over 300 years. She was very keen and interested in seeking answers to what was the current status of the craft editions, where they were, what was happening with them and why was India an inspirational, economically booming society consuming luxury handed from the western perspective. "That is what my masters was focused on. Wrap is named after my first project", she says.
With a unique design philosophy in place, Gunjan set about sketching a business model that would bring in returns. Wrap specialises in designing residential spaces. With the young and dynamic team of designers at work a bulk of revenues come in from the sale of individual pieces of furniture. Gunjan's vision of merging global design trends with environmental friendly and sustainable materials has been a big hit with clients.
She explains how wrap makes money on an interview to CNBC-TV18. She says, "the product ranges from Rs 50,000 to Rs 15,00,000. It totally depends on what we are doing, what is the material, where it is being made and what is the complexity of the product design. In terms of interior design, there is a consultancy fee that we charge per sq ft. If it is a turnkey project, which depends on your entire material selection and the craftsmanship and the sourcing involved then it is a per sq ft rate for the entire project".
Gunjan's effort of repositioning the 'made in India' brand internationally has won her accolade. It includes several Elle Décor International Design Awards and the British council Young Creative Finalist Award for 2007. She has also hit the international exhibition circuit from London to Paris. She has a slew of international clients including Droog in Amsterdam, Swarovski in Paris and the grand dame of design Rossana Orlandi. Yet the real feather in her cap came in April last year when she became the first Indian to exhibit her collection at the Milan Furniture Fair Mecca for interior design.
Salone del Mobile is the world's important design event and it is attended by huge number of people from all over the world. It is where all of the most important or strategic companies showcase their new collections, designers showcase their new ideas. Gunjan said it is the Mecca of design. It was always her dream since she started taking her work to Milan. "The outcome of that fair was absolutely fantastic because the entire collection was picked within minutes of the launch by one of the world's leading galleriest", she says.
While work takes her places, she recharges her batteries at home just being mom. Watching over her daughters and pushing to wrap-up more collaboration with galleries in Europe and America, Gunjan has her hands full.
