Analysis:


  • The fund invests in small and mid cap stocks that are not a part of the top 100 stocks by market capitalisation. At the end of May 2012 the fund had the highest exposure to the consumer non durables sector at 10 per cent of the portfolio with finance and software not far behind. Godrej Industries was the top individual holding in the portfolio and Eicher Motors, Apollo Tyres, Gruh Finance, max India, Bajaj Finserve , EID parry and Info Edge were some of the other leading holdings. The portfolio turnover ratio was 0.77.  The CNX Midcap Index was the benchmark index and it was an outperformer over the one and three year time periods ended March 2012
  • Six months later the fund witnessed a change in the portfolio as finance was now the top sector with a share of over 11 per cent. Consumer non durables, banks, pharma and construction were some of the other top sectors. Godrej Industries continued to be the top individual holding with Eicher Motors, Pantaloons retail, Tata Global Beverage, Bombay Dyeing, EID Parry and Max India being some of the other top holdings. The fund had an exposure of 47 per cent of its portfolio to mid cap stocks, 23 per cent to small caps and another 22 per cent to micro cap stocks. The fund was an outperformer over the one and three year periods ended September 2012.
  • There was a further consolidation in the portfolio at the end of April 2013 as finance saw its share go up to 15 per cent of the portfolio. Consumer non durables, software, chemicals and Pharma were some of the other top sectors. The share of mid  cap stocks in the portfolio went up to  56 per cent while the small and micro cap figures dropped below the 20 per cent mark each.  Godrej Industries continued to be the leading stock in the portfolio. Eicher Motors, HPCL, Glenmark Pharma, ING Vysysa Bank, Tata Global beverage, CMC and Max India were some of the other leading stocks.  The portfolio turnover ratio was 0.8 times. The fund was an outperformer over the one and three year time periods ended March 2013.
  • There was once again a change in the sectoral position of the fund at the end of November 2013 as Pharma edged out software to be the top sector in the portfolio.  Consumer non durables, banks and finance were some of the other leading sectors. Tata Communications was now the top individual holding with IPCA Labs, CMC, Persistent System, Arvind, ING Vysya Bank, Bayer Crop science and Britannia Industries being the other top stocks. Midcaps continued to be a massive 55 per cent of the total portfolio. The portfolio turnover ratio went up to 0.95 times. The fund was a slight underperformer over the one year period but an outperformer over the three year period ended September 2013.
