Mallya offers 3 kg gold to Lord Venkateswara

Tirupati,Dec18 (PTI) Promoter of crisis-ridden Kingfisher Airlines and UB Group Chairman Vijay Mallya made an offering of gold bricks, weighing about three kg, at the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara on his 58th birthday today. Mallya donated the gold after offering worship and requested temple authorities to use it for gilding the doors at the sanctum sanctorum, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Deputy Executive Officer (temple) Chinnamgari Ramana told PTI. The United Breweries chief, who arrived with his family last night, celebrated his birthday at a simple function held at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams guesthouse, Venkata Vijayam, donated by him 15 years ago, temple sources said. In August, Mallya had offered Rs 80 lakh gold-plated doors to the Kukke Subramanya temple, a place in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district visited by many a well-known personality looking for a turnaround in fortunes. Kingfisher, which Mallya launched in 2005, was once India's second-largest airline by domestic market share, but is now in deep financial distress. It has been grounded since October 1 following a strike by its pilots and engineers over non-payment of salary dues and its flying license has been suspended. 2-yr-old thrown out of moving bus by father, survives

Nashik, Dec 18 (PTI) A two-year-old girl had a miraculous escape after her father threw her from a moving bus following a quarrel with her mother, police said today. Malegaon resident Abdul Rahim Ansari and his wife Farzana had a tiff over some issue yesterday while they were travelling in a bus with their daughter Ayesha near Dhule on the Mumbai-Agra national highway. In a fit of anger, Abdul threw his daughter out of the moving MSRTC bus near Residency hotel on the highway. However, the girl escaped with minor injuries and was taken to Dhule civil hospital for check-up, police said. Meanwhile, search is on to nab Abdul, who fled from the hospital, they added. Russia expects Obama visit despite "mini-crisis" in ties

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is likely to visit Russia in the first half of 2013 despite a "mini-crisis" in relations over U.S. moves to punish Russians accused of rights violations, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.

Yuri Ushakov, a foreign policy adviser to President Vladimir Putin, gave no further details. Obama and Putin have both signalled since winning presidential elections this year that they want an improvement in U.S.-Russian ties.

Akiyavedi demands CBI probe into Marad killings

Kozhikode, Dec 15 (PTI) Hindu Aikyavedi Kerala unit President K P Sashikala Teacher today demanded that Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy explain the reason for not ordering a CBI probe into the Marad killings in which eight persons were killed on May 2003. Speaking to mediapersons here, Sashikala said Congress, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the CPI(M) which had opposed for a CBI inquiry had shifted their stand now. She alleged that the shifting of stand by IUML showed that party's double standards.'If the present stand taken by the IUML was sincere, they should raised the issue in the next cabinet meeting', she said. Ekka and Rai released from jail

Ranchi, Dec 15 (PTI) Former Jharkhand ministers Enos Ekka and Harinarain Rai were today released from the Birsa Munda Central jail here, two days after getting provisional bail from the Supreme Court. "Both of them were released during the day," a senior official of the jail told PTI here. The two, arrested in 2009 for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income, were ministers when Madhu Koda was the Chief Minister in the UPA government between 2006 and 2008. Rai and Ekka were arrested on August 17, 2009, after a social activist filed a PIL before the Jharkhand High Court accusing them of amassing wealth more than their known source of income during their ministerial tenures. Another ex-minister Kamlesh Singh got bail earlier. Koda and another of his former cabinet colleague Bhanu Pratap Sahi are still in judicial custody. PTI PVR NIK AVT
